Industry: Energy Storage
Testing Application: Testing large-format pouch cells under extreme conditions
A leading energy storage company approached Associated Environmental Systems (AES) with a need to test large-format pouch cells for advanced grid-scale applications. These cells, critical to the next generation of energy storage solutions, must be validated under a variety of extreme conditions—including high heat, rapid thermal transitions, and elevated safety hazard scenarios.
Due to the size requirements of the cells being tested, the company required a solution with a large internal volume, the ability to handle live loads, and integrated safety features for potential thermal runaway events. It was also essential that the chambers supported temperature only and humidity environments.
The AES Solution
AES recommended its temperature only FD-596-7.5-SAFE and our temperature and humidity HD-596-7.5-SAFE chambers which are large volume, high-performance models designed for rigorous battery testing.
Spacious Testing Volume: With 96 cu. ft. of internal space and a 4 ft x 4 ft door, the chamber accommodates large battery fixtures and setups, providing flexibility in layout and airflow.
High-Performance Options: Available in both FD and HD models, the chambers offer multiple performance levels to meet the client's specific ramp rate and pull-down needs—ensuring accurate and repeatable test conditions, even with live loads. This customer opted for our 7.5 performance level.
Integrated Battery Safety Features: Engineered with hazard level protection up to EUCAR 7, the chambers include safety features like temperature limited sheath heaters, spark resistant fan blades, door safety latches rated up to 4000 pounds and more features to prevent and mitigate in case of a battery thermal event (BTE).
New Refrigeration Compliance: These chambers are using R449A refrigeration in compliance with SB1206 regulations.
Crafting Your Perfect Test Set-Up
The customer received chambers that were purpose-built for large-format pouch cell testing in a high-risk, high live load environment. By customizing safety features and chamber performance to match the client’s needs, AES helped them ensure battery integrity under demanding conditions. This customer was impressed with our dedicated to provide a solution, they purchased 5 chambers in total.
This project highlights AES’s continued commitment to supporting emerging technologies in the renewable energy and grid storage sector—delivering scalable, safe, and reliable environmental testing solutions to meet evolving industry standards.
