Testing Application: UL 213 Cold-Weather Durability and Pressurization Testing of Pipe Couplings

A world leader in mechanical pipe joining and flow control solutions required a custom chamber to validate the performance and integrity of pressurized pipe couplings under extreme environmental conditions. Their testing process involves subjecting couplings to pressure loads of up to 40 psi while cycling between ambient, subzero, and high-temperature environments—replicating the challenging conditions their products may encounter in the field.

The AES Solution

Associated Environmental Systems (AES) engineered a specialized chamber designed to meet UL 213 cold testing requirements while providing precise control, safety, and flexibility for multi-specimen testing. AES customized our standard temperature chamber, our SD-208 to have custom controller logic to ensure compatibility with the unique demands of the UL 213 test application.

  • Multi-Specimen Pressurization Integration: Designed to seamlessly interface with 12 pressure transducers (two per specimen) mounted externally on a manifold, this system provides continuous, high-resolution data capture to monitor the pressure integrity of up to six pipe coupling specimens simultaneously.
  • UL 213 Profile Execution & Performance: The chamber maintains a precise range from ambient to 40°C with exceptional stability. It is pre-programmed to execute the multi-step UL 213 cold test, including a 2-hour ambient soak at 73°C and the long -40°C soak for up to 24 hours, ensuring repeatable, certified results.
  • Safety and Custom Logic Integration (AESONE CONNECT): The F4T controller is programmed with custom logic that continuously monitors all transducers. If pressure in any specimen drops below the critical 25 psi threshold, the system immediately triggers an alarm and requires a manual shutdown, fulfilling a crucial safety and compliance requirement.
  • Enhanced Operator Safety Features: Includes a safety-interlocked electric door latch with a redundant mechanical release. This system prevents the door from unlocking or opening until all specimens' pressure readings are below a safe 5 psi threshold, prioritizing operator safety during and after high-pressure testing.
  • Ready to Use: Designed for quick on-site validation, allowing immediate operation upon delivery
